Chancellor search underway at the Â鶹´«Ã½ Southeast

Last November, Chancellor Rick Caulfield announced his intention to retire in June 2020. At the direction of Â鶹´«Ã½ President Jim Johnsen, the search process began immediately, starting with the creation of a representative search committee and a timeline for the search. The committee includes representatives from Â鶹´«Ã½S governance groups, campus advisory councils, and community partners.

The Senator Ted Stevens Legislative Internship Program, hosted at the Â鶹´«Ã½ Southeast (Â鶹´«Ã½S), is in full swing with students earning college credit while working in the 2020 Alaska State Legislature. Legislators and Interns gathered in the Capitol for a 'meet and greet' event on January 29. Â鶹´«Ã½ President Jim Johnsen and Â鶹´«Ã½S Chancellor Rick Caulfield joined program coordinator Dr. Glenn Wright in welcoming this year's group of 16 students from all three Â鶹´«Ã½ universities.

$2,500 for early innovation travel grants

The Alaska Foundational Innovation Corps program (I-Corps) is seeking new participants who could benefit from a $2,500 travel grant to conduct market research for their idea. Ideas can be in the very early stages; often this is better. Ideas with a technical or technology-enabled component are preferred, but all proposals are welcome. Every applicant receives a free entrepreneurial consulting call with the Â鶹´«Ã½'s entrepreneur-in-residence and will be offered access to further resources.

Growing emergency management program recognized for excellence

The Â鶹´«Ã½ Fairbanks' online bachelor's degree program in homeland security and emergency management has recently received top reviews in several college rankings. The program has earned top-five rankings from Nonprofit Colleges Online (No. 1), Best Value Schools (No. 2) and The Best Schools (No. 5). In addition, College Choice ranked it as eighth on its list of the best homeland security degrees.

Â鶹´«Ã½ Southeast business programs earn national accreditation

The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree Board of Commissioners has awarded Â鶹´«Ã½ Southeast (Â鶹´«Ã½S) accreditation of its business programs. Â鶹´«Ã½S is the first institution in Alaska to receive this honor.

Coronavirus update: do not travel to China

On February 2, the U.S. Department of State- Bureau of Consular Affairs and the Centers for Disease Control issued a level-four do not travel advisory to China, because of the coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, China.

Â鶹´«Ã½ Board of Regents approves tuition increase, sets aside $1.5 million for student financial aid

The Â鶹´«Ã½ Board of Regents voted to increase the amount undergraduate students pay for college tuition by 5 percent beginning in fall semester 2020, but directed the administration to invest $1.5 million of tuition revenue to financial aid for students at each university. The Â鶹´«Ã½ tuition rate remains well below the tuition rates at most universities in the west.

Â鶹´«Ã½S Marine Biology Bachelor's listed #5 in College Values Online Top 20 National Ranking

College Values Online has ranked the Â鶹´«Ã½ Southeast as one of the best values for a bachelor's in marine biology degree program. The ranking takes into account affordability, accreditation, and rankings in major publications like U.S. News and World Report. College Values Online references compensation research organization PayScale, which lists the median wage for marine biologists at $51,538 per year. By attaining a marine biology degree, students are prepared for entry-level positions in marine science fields as well as continued studies at the graduate level.
